A small, personal devotional icon of Shadakshari Lokeshvara, the six-syllable form of Avalokiteshvara, bodhisattva of compassion. The painting is a fine example of the Kashmiri manner as it was carried into Tibet: the deity's elongated eyes, small defined chin and narrow waist set above a fleshy abdomen marked by a diamond-shaped navel all echo the painting and sculpture of Kashmir. In the lower-right corner the donors are shown in distinctive striped trousers and a white cape — dress that locates the work in western Tibet.
